Easy Fruit Skewers

I love things that are colorful, and these rainbow fruit skewers are just that! Just looking at them life seems more cheery and bright. And then you get to eat them! Full of fresh fruit, flavors and nutrients these fruit kabobs are insanely easy and delicious. This is one of the best ways to get a serving or two of fruits a day. My kids love them and I love that they will eat them. It is almost like I am tricking them to eat healthy. But I won’t tell if you don’t.

These fruit skewers are great as an appetizer, side dish or even a dessert especially served with a sweet dip. They are also a fun way to serve up fresh fruit as a snack. I do not know what it is about foods served on skewers, but it just makes them so enticing and fun. I can make a dish and put it in a fancy bowl and it won’t get touched. But put the same ingredients on a stick and it disappears. Just like these Antipasto, Teriyaki Beef and Grilled Hawaiian Chicken skewers, fruit skewers are just more enjoyable!

What You Need For Rainbow Fruit Skewers

This is all subject to your tastes and what is in season. Change the ingredients as you need to.

  • Strawberries: Sweet and juicy, look for the strawberries that are uniform in size and deep red color.
  • Oranges: You can leave the peel on or take it off.
  • Kiwi: Peel and cut, look for kiwi that is firm but gives under slight pressure.
  • Blackberries: Look for large deep-colored blackberries.
  • Red Grapes: The best grapes are firm and crunchy, not mushy.
  • Green Grapes: Slightly sweeter than red grapes they add a nice crunch.
  • Blueberries: Find blueberries that are uniform in size and just barely ripe.
  • Wooden Skewers: Use new wooden skewers to avoid cracks or splinters.

Assembling Your Fruit Kabobs

These are perfect to have little hands help assemble. Kids love to help in the kitchen and are more apt to eat what they can help make.

  1. Skewer: Using a skewer thread the strawberries, orange slices, kiwi, blackberries, grapes, and blueberries.
  2. Serve: Arrange on a platter and serve with your favorite dip or all by themselves.

Different Fruits You Can Use

Fresh fruit is a MUST for these skewers. Frozen fruit will just turn to mush. Because fruits are best at different times throughout the year, your choices of fruit might be different. Whatever fruit you use they will be incredible. Here are suggestions for the different colors.

  • Red: Raspberries, Strawberries, Watermelon, Seeded Cherries, and Red Apples.
  • Orange: Clementines or nectarines, Cantaloupe, Apricots and Mango are great orange flavor and colored fruit.
  • Yellow: Pineapple, Peaches, Golden delicious Apples, Pears some Mangos and Bananas.
  • Green: Kiwi, Green Grapes, Green Apples, and Honeydew.
  • Blue: Blueberries, Dark Purple/Blue Grapes, Elderberries and Blackberries.
  • Purple: Purple Grapes, Plums, and Blackberries can be used here too.

Tips For Fantastic Fruit Skewers

The best part about these skewers is that they are fresh, vibrant, and fun!

  • Spreads: Fruit skewers are awesome on their own, but you can serve with dipping sauces for more fun. Chocolate sauce, fondue, caramel sauce, fruit-flavored yogurts, whipped topping mixed with coconut or vanilla. You can also use vanilla or chocolate pudding as dipping sauces.
  • Make A Cloud: Make these truly a rainbow and stick a cloud on the end of the skewer. Use a large marshmallow!
  • No Soaking: Since you are not grilling the fruit, you do not need to soak your wooden skewers.

Make-Ahead Rainbow Fruit Kabobs

You can prep the fruit ahead of time and then assemble the kabobs right before serving if you desire. There are just a few things to keep in mind if you want to prep ahead of time.

  • Avoid: When making fruit skewers ahead of time you will want to avoid fruits that brown quickly or get mushy fast. This would include bananas, pears and apples. They will still taste great, but not look good.
  • Trick To Keep Fruit Fresh: With these suggestions, you can keep fruit fresh for up to 3 days in advance. There are a couple of methods you could use. One is to purchase and use a product called Fruit Fresh or any other product that has either or both citric and ascorbic acids. These will keep your fruits from turning brown. You can also soak your fruit in a mixture of 1 cup water and 1 Tablespoon lemon juice. Soak for up to 10 minutes.

More Ways to Enjoy Fruit!

Fruit is easy to eat on its own for me, but others sometimes need a bit more encouragement, or disguise. Fruit brightens and lightens meals and rounds them out nutritionally. It is important part of healthy diet, but can be hard to work into our meals all the time. Using fruit in your side dishes is a great way to get all the nutrients, flavors and vitamins your body needs. So if you are trying to add more fruit to your diet or just need to freshen up your menu ideas, I have tried and true recipes for you to try.
