Our 6 teenagers LOVE BBQ Chicken…so we make this recipe often. The crispy roasting process + tangy sauce + moist chicken inside makes it a permanent family FAVORITE!
Roasted homemade BBQ Chicken Breasts are sure to be a go-to at your house as well!
I really prefer bone-in breasts or thighs for this recipe to keep the chicken moist.
Breasts take a bit longer to roast than thighs, so use a meat thermometer!
makes 4 servings
Ingredients:
- 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken breast halves (about 8oz each)
- 1 large sweet onion, diced small
- 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced
- 1-1/2 cups organic sugar-free tomato sauce
- 3 Tbsps apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup raw honey or pure maple syrup
- 1 Tbsp ground mustard, or dry mustard
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp chili powder
- 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
- 2 Tbsps avocado oil, or olive oil, divided
- 1/4 tsp freshly ground pepper
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees f. and grease a 13×9 baking dish with some cooking spray, or lightly brush with avocado oil.Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil and heat. Carefully place your chicken into the hot oil, skin side down, and sear until nicely golden and brown, about 3 minutes on each side.Transfer your chicken into the prepared baking dish and set aside. Using the same heated skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add in onions and sauté until tender. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 more minute.Stir in your tomato sauce, vinegar, ground mustard, oregano, chili powder, and cinnamon. Season with sea salt and pepper to taste, then whisk well and let it simmer on low for about 5 minutes stirring occasionally. Stir in honey/maple syrup and cook for additional 2 minutes.Pour this sauce over the chicken breasts and transfer the dish into your preheated oven.Bake, uncovered for about 40 minutes, or just until a thermometer inserted in the center of each chicken breast reads 165°F.Serve your saucey BBQ chicken warm.
Enjoy!
