Turkey gravy is simple and easy to make leaving everyone full and happy after a complete Thanksgiving meal!
- To make a roux is equal parts fat to flour. Roux is a combination of fat from the pan drippings and flour.
- Cook the roux until it smells nutty. You want to cook the flour until it has a cereal smell and looks dry.
- Substitute cornstarch for your flour if you prefer a different thickening agent. Mix equal parts cornstarch and water or broth.
- Thicken or thin out your gravy by adding more or less flour or cornstarch to your gravy.
- For a smoother gravy strain the pan drippings before adding them to the gravy. This will leave out the thicker chunks of drippings.
- Making your turkey gravy right when your turkey is out of the oven while it is resting has the best results.
- Whisking your gravy is a key instruction so you get a smooth textured gravy. If it is lumpy pour it through a sieve before serving.
- Serve your turkey gravy warm. If is begins to cool slightly, simply warm up in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds at a time until it is warm through.

To end the meal I love to indulge in my Grandma’s Famous Pumpkin Pie. It is so good, there is never a piece left.
Storing turkey gravy
There are so many things to do before the holidays and cooking dinner is the top priority.
I totally understand trying to get things cooked ahead of time and ready for the big meal.
Turkey gravy is one of those recipes that can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator; however, sometimes it is best just to enjoy it fresh, hot and ready to serve while your turkey is slowly cooling down or being cut up.
There are always pros and cons for making ahead and either way that is best for you will work with this easy turkey gravy recipe.
- To Make Ahead: simply follow the recipe instructions and make your turkey gravy. Once it is completely cooled, place in an airtight container or ziplock baggie. This will store in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days.
- Warming up: when ready to reheat, pour it back into a saucepan and add a 1 to 2 tablespoons of chicken broth or water to thin it or keep it thick depending on your preference. Heat it on low heat gently, stirring it occasionally until it is warmed through. This will take about 10 to 15 minutes.
